SPRINGFIELD – R. D. Lawrence Construction Company of Springfield is managing construction of the new World War II Veterans Memorial being built at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
Work is underway on the $1.5 million dollar project. The design features two large granite walls flanking a 12 foot concrete globe that commemorates major battles in the conflict.
“R.D. Lawrence Construction Company is honored to have been chosen to manage construction of this important project,” said John Goetz, President of R.D. Lawrence Construction Company. “The memorial will serve as a testament to the great sacrifice made by the WWII generation. It will stand as a reminder of the price that brave generation paid to preserve our freedom and that of our children.”
Site and foundation work recently began on the project. Work on the memorial’s globe centerpiece is expected to begin around Labor Day. The project is scheduled to be completed in November. A December 4, 2004 dedication is planned.
The architect for the project is Isaksen & Glerum Architects of Urbana.
R.D. Lawrence Construction Company also built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Oak Ridge Cemetary.
